STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO DRIVER EDUCATION FOR MINOR HOMESCHOOLED STUDENTS
1. CHOOSE AN APPROVED CORRESPONDENCE COURSE
There are several schools to choose from. Here is a current list of approved schools.
2. OBTAIN WRITTEN APPROVAL TO ENROLL IN A COURSE
All students must apply to the Traffic Safety Center by going to their website – click on “Application to Enroll in Driver Education Correspondence School,” print out the form, fill out the homeschool section, provide a copy of your Notification of Establishment of a Homeschool or your confirmation and a letter stating that you homeschool this student in all subjects. The approval will be sent by email both to the homeschool and the correspondence school.
3.ORDER THE COURSE
Prepare for the written exam using the MVD driver manual and course materials. Practice tests are available online.
4.OBTAIN THE PERMIT
The student has to pass the written test and provide identification. Be sure everything is in order before you make the trip.
5.COMPLETE THE COURSE AND BEHIND-THE-WHEEL TRAINING SUCCESSFULLY
The course provider will provide a certificate of completion.
6.OBTAIN PROVISIONAL LICENSE
The student will take a behind-the-wheel road test at the MVD, and must submit the Certificate of Completion and the road log. The provisional license is held for one year. An applicant gets a regular license thereafter.
NOTE: New Mexico requires that a parent or certified guardian ride and log the time with the teen driver for 50 hours (10 of which should be at night).
CAPE has coordinated with TEACH MY TEEN TO DRIVE, which is a program that teaches the parents how to successfully ride with and encourage their teens during the required driving hours time. CAPE-NM Members can receive a 20% discount for the program by requesting one from info@cape-nm.org.
