2020 CAPE-NM Christian Homeschool Convention
How the COVID-19 Pandemic is affecting CAPE-NM events.
We have all been learning to make face masks, searching for toilet paper, and now being limited in what we can buy for our outdoor BBQs. Life has changed beyond belief over the past two months. Many are shocked by what we are seeing in the United States, problems with freedoms being limited and censorship on Facebook. Some of the stories we hear are beyond belief. We are all searching for a return to some sense of normalcy in all aspects of our lives. None of this is a surprise to God. He is still in control and these challenges are all a part of His plan. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, ” plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” In light of everything going on around us, the CAPE Board has determined that we must postpone convention. The orders of the governor will not allow such large gatherings. And while the infection rate in NM, for most of the state, is relatively low, we do not wish to put anyone in a dangerous position to risk their lives. The heart of the Board is to foster relationships within the homeschool community and this is more difficult to do when we are not together. We are holding out hope that we can still put together an event for the end of the summer. We will continue to evaluate our options and send details as soon as they become available. We are praying for your families, your health, and your communities.

Chuck Black, a former F-16 fighter pilot and tactical combat communications engineer, is the author of seventeen novels, including the popular Kingdom Series, The Knights of Arrethtrae
series, the Wars of the Realm series, The Starlore Legacy, and Call to Arms: The Guts and Glory of Courageous Fatherhood. Kingdom’s Dawn of The Kingdom Series received Homeschool.com’s “Voted #1” award and was on CBA’s top ten best sellers list twice in 2008
for all Christian Youth Literature. His heart is to equip and encourage families in their pursuit of Christ, and he seeks to do so through his allegorical and Scripture-based novels, his seminars, and his published articles.
Chuck has served as an Elder at Cornerstone First Baptist Church in Williston, ND and has taught adult Sunday school classes for the past nineteen years, including frequent class sessions on parenting. In addition to speaking at homeschool and Christian conferences all across the United States and Canada, he has written columns for the Teach Them Diligently Convention and the North Dakota State Homeschool Association. Chuck has also been published in LifeWay’s Home Life Magazine, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, Walk Thru the Bible’s Stand Strong Magazine, and on various websites and e-newsletters.
Chuck is a believer in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and in the Holy-Spirit-inspired, infallible Word of God. He is devoted to his wife, Andrea, and their six children and multiple grandchildren. Chuck and Andrea homeschooled their six children for twenty-four years; five have graduated from college and one is set to graduate next year. Chuck’s passion is to inspire people of all ages to follow the Lord with zeal and to equip parents, pastors, and youth leaders to accomplish the same.
Since joining HSLDA to lead the litigation team in 2001, Jim Mason has represented homeschooling families in a wide range of challenging situations and has set precedents that have expanded freedom for the homeschool community. In addition to serving as HSLDA’s Vice President of Litigation and Development, Jim serves as the President of ParentalRights.org and Vice President of HSLDA Action.
Jim was instrumental in litigating the 2008 California case Jonathan L., in which a state appellate court reversed its previous ruling that homeschooling was illegal. This put an end to years of controversy over the legal status of homeschooling in California and set a precedent that affects other states as well.
Before coming to HSLDA, Jim represented numerous right-to-life groups in campaign finance cases and clerked for an appellate court in Oregon. He graduated with highest honors from Regent University School of Law in 1996 and Jim is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on active duty in Operation Desert Storm.
Jim and his wife Debbie live in Winchester, Virginia. They have seven children and two granddaughters. The Masons have homeschooled all of their children: six have graduated and one is still being taught at home. In his spare time, Jim is an avid birdwatcher, waffle connoisseur, and abstract art fan.
Vicki Bentley is the mother of eight daughters, foster mom of over fifty, and grandma to 23 wonderful grandbabies and five great-grandbabies (so far). Vicki has homeschooled 17 children since 1988, alongside her husband Jim, and has been a support group leader since 1991. She has served on the executive board and convention committee of the Home Educators Association of Virginia and has addressed state and national conventions, university teacher organizations, and many mothers’ groups. She is the author of My Homeschool Planner, Everyday Cooking, The Everyday Family Chore System, Home Education 101: A Mentoring Program for New Homeschoolers, High School 101: Blueprint for Success, and other homeschool and homemaking helps. She currently serves as a Toddlers to Tweens consultant and the Group Services director for HSLDA. Vicki has a heart for parents, with practical wisdom and encouraging words.
