2022 CAPE-NM Convention Keynote Speakers
Chuck Black, a former F-16 fighter pilot and tactical combat communications engineer, is the author of eighteen novels, including the popular Kingdom Series, The Knights of Arrethtrae series, the Wars of the Realm series, The Starlore Legacy, and Call to Arms: The Guts and Glory of Courageous Fatherhood. Kingdom’s Dawn of The Kingdom Series received Homeschool.com’s “Voted #1” award and was on CBA’s top ten best sellers list twice in 2008 for all Christian Youth Literature. His heart is to equip and encourage families in their pursuit of Christ, and he seeks to do so through his allegorical and Scripture-based novels, his seminars, and his published articles.
Chuck has served as an Elder at Cornerstone First Baptist Church in Williston, ND and has taught adult Sunday school classes for the past nineteen years, including frequent class sessions on parenting. In addition to speaking at homeschool and Christian conferences all across the United States and Canada, he has written columns for the Teach Them Diligently Convention and the North Dakota State Homeschool Association. Chuck has also been published in LifeWay’s Home Life Magazine, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, Walk Thru the Bible’s Stand Strong Magazine, and on various websites and e-newsletters.
Chuck is a believer in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and in the Holy-Spirit-inspired, infallible Word of God. He is devoted to his wife, Andrea, and their six children and multiple grandchildren. Chuck and Andrea homeschooled their six children for twenty-four years; all six have graduated from college with four that have married. Chuck’s passion is to inspire people of all ages to follow the Lord with zeal and to equip parents, pastors, and youth leaders to accomplish the same.
A first generation homeschool graduate, the President and CEO of Unbound, and homeschool dad of six, Jonathan has spoken for over a decade to parents, students, and groups across the country about effectively preparing young adults for life, the excitement and adventure of raising a family, maximizing higher education options, and how to be extraordinary at ordinary things. With a fresh, enthusiastic speaking approach, he consistently provides new perspective, practical advice, and honest hope to audiences of varied ages and backgrounds. Jonathan worked for nine years as a Director of Admissions for a private liberal arts college and has since worked in non-traditional higher education for over a decade. Jonathan and his family make their home in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
Cathy Heckendorn is a Homeschool Survivor. She loves that term because she went into homeschooling kicking and screaming, but after graduating all 4 of their children, she says it was the best decision ever made for her. Cathy has lived the challenges, comedies, struggles, joys, tears, and victories that home education has to offer, and now, she desires to encourage and empower other parents to embrace all those things as they set out on their own calling to “train up their children” and to share that not only can they survive they can also watch their children thrive!
Cathy has been married to her high school sweetheart, John, for 35 years. They have raised and graduated all four of their children and now enjoy watching them take the reins of their own lives as they marry (1 married and another engaged) and have children to train up themselves (1 spunky granddaughter, so far). Besides serving on the CAPE-NM Board, Cathy enjoys all the amenities that living on a ranch provides, reading books, playing games with friends and family, and curling up on the couch with a hot cup of tea and a friend.
