Dr. Brian Ray
Dr. Brian Ray is a leading international expert in research on homeschooling and president of the National Home Education Research Institute. He has published numerous articles and books, been repeatedly interviewed by major media, served as an expert witness in court cases across the U.S. and in Canada, and testified to legislatures regarding educational issues. He is a former university professor and public and private school classroom teacher, and is an elder in a local church. He holds a PhD (science education, Oregon State University), MS (zoology, Ohio University), and BS (biology, University of Puget Sound). Brian and Betsy have been married 42 years and have eight children, all of whom were homeschooled, and they have a growing number of grandchildren.
Since joining HSLDA to lead the litigation team in 2001, Jim Mason has represented homeschooling families in a wide range of challenging situations and has set precedents that have expanded freedom for the homeschool community. In addition to serving as HSLDA’s Vice President of Litigation and Development, Jim serves as the President of ParentalRights.org and Vice President of HSLDA Action.
Jim was instrumental in litigating the 2008 California case Jonathan L., in which a state appellate court reversed its previous ruling that homeschooling was illegal. This put an end to years of controversy over the legal status of homeschooling in California and set a precedent that affects other states as well.
Before coming to HSLDA, Jim represented numerous right-to-life groups in campaign finance cases and clerked for an appellate court in Oregon. He graduated with highest honors from Regent University School of Law in 1996 and Jim is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on active duty in Operation Desert Storm.
Jim and his wife Debbie live in Winchester, Virginia. They have seven children and two granddaughters. The Masons have homeschooled all of their children: six have graduated and one is still being taught at home. In his spare time, Jim is an avid birdwatcher, waffle connoisseur, and abstract art fan.
Betsy is a warm, compassionate, and fun-hearted teacher. She and Brian have been married for 42 years and have 8 children, all grown, and 14 grandchildren. All their children are/were homeschooled through their secondary years. Betsy teaches her grandchildren, helps manage a six-acre farm, grows and preserves food, is a part of local and statewide homeschool leadership, and is active in her church and community exercising her gifts of hospitality, teaching, and blessing other women. Betsy earned her B.S. in elementary education. Betsy is also a key support to her husband, Dr. Brian Ray, in his international work as president of the National Home Education Research Institute.
Vicki Bentley is the mother of eight daughters, foster mom of over fifty, and grandma to 23 wonderful grandbabies and five great-grandbabies (so far). Vicki has homeschooled 17 children since 1988, alongside her husband Jim, and has been a support group leader since 1991. She has served on the executive board and convention committee of the Home Educators Association of Virginia and has addressed state and national conventions, university teacher organizations, and many mothers’ groups. She is the author of My Homeschool Planner, Everyday Cooking, The Everyday Family Chore System, Home Education 101: A Mentoring Program for New Homeschoolers, High School 101: Blueprint for Success, and other homeschool and homemaking helps. She currently serves as a Toddlers to Tweens consultant and the Group Services director for HSLDA. Vicki has a heart for parents, with practical wisdom and encouraging words.
