Support groups provide opportunities for encouragement, inspiration, socialization (of course), field trips, group rates, co-op classes, testing, curricula exchanges, news, community service, public relations, competition, and much, much more. For many home educators, they are essential!
Some groups are highly organized and structured, others are relaxed and casual, and the rest fall somewhere in between. The larger cities have several groups to choose among, and in more rural communities families may have to travel a bit. Occasionally, a church will have a members-only group, but most are open to anyone until they get big enough to split.
The important thing is that every community in the state needs a go-to person who can help connect new home schooling families with the information and the resources they need. It is very helpful to have a phone tree or email list when there are local problems to be solved, a special speaker will be in the neighborhood, or a legislator needs information.
All the support groups in New Mexico are served by volunteer home schooling families, committed and very busy. However, every support group is ready and willing to serve the needs of home school families who seek support, so we make every effort to make effective, efficient connections.
If you live in an area without an active support group, CAPE will do whatever it takes to help you start one.
